Sifnos

Sifnos

Each Cycladic island has its own distinct character - much like sisters in a family - and Sifnos is without a doubt the most stylish sister! Its relatively small size makes it easy to explore, but still offers the complete Cycladic package of white washed settlements, tranquil beaches, lively nightlife, and probably the best food in the Cyclades.

Most of Sifnos' villages are nested on the hills and afford panoramic views to the Aegean Sea. Apollonia, the capital town of Sifnos is the centre of all the fun; cute houses with blooming balconies, narrow cobblestone streets lined with tasteful shops, galleries, restaurants, and bars. A few kilometres away from the town lies the traditional settlement of Artemonas, a village of unique charm and exceptional finesse. Wander around the streets while admiring neoclassical mansions with beautiful gardens, and let the sweet-smelling aromas of jasmine and amygdalota – the traditional Greek almond marzipans – satisfy your senses!

The historic settlement of Kastro is a picture-perfect cliff-top village, inhabited since ancient times. Built over the ruins of the ancient capital of Sifnos, it still preserves part of the fortification walls and the ruins of a Venetian fortress; while coats of arms are still visible on some houses, enhancing the village's distinctive medieval flair. Kastro is the ideal place to watch the breathtaking sunset and admire the picturesque church of the Seven Martyrs, one of the most photographed chapels of the Aegean, that is perched on a rock that seems to rise from the sea.

Beaches in Sifnos are known for their azure waters and sun-drenched sandy shores, however, the most popular ones are located in the southern part of the island. Platis Gialos is the most cosmopolitan beach on the island, whereas next to it lies Vathy, a sandy beach with crystal-clear waters, ideal for families. In the enclosed bay of Chrissopighi, named after the homonymous Monastery which stands on a rocky islet, you can either lay on the sand under the pine trees or on a large slab of rock!

Things to do:

  • Taste Exceptional Local Dishes
Sifnos is an island filled with tasty memories and mouth-watering delicacies, definitely worth trying! Try the revithada, a slow-cooked chickpea casserole dish and savour delicious local sweets such as 'pastelia' and 'amygdalota'. After all, Sifnos is the birthplace of the famous royal chef Nikolaos Tselementes, the author of the cookbook that taught most Greek mothers how to cook!
  • Catch the Sunset at Kastro
Watching the sunset from Kastro is really amazing. There is an excellent bar at the top that plays Argentine tangos, and offers a romantic setting for sipping cocktails and taking-in the mesmerising vistas!
  • Discover Rambagas
Located in Apollonia, Rambagas is an original type of open-air Cycladic mall, packed with restaurants, shops, bars, and art installations.
  • Visit a Pottery Workshop
Sifnos has a long-standing tradition of pottery making, so take advantage of the opportunity and visit a workshop to gain insight into the unique features of local pottery. Established in 1870, the Atsonios ceramics workshop in Vathi is one of the oldest on the island; you can still visit today to admire the potters' refined work.
  • Explore the Archaeological Museum of Sifnos
Housed in a traditional building in Kastro, the museum includes collections of Archaic and Hellenistic sculptures, such as tomb articles, architectural pieces, and statues that date from the Archaic to the Roman period, as well as pottery found in castle ruins.
