Tinos

Located near the geographical centre of the Cyclades island complex, Tinos is an enchanting island and one of the most spiritual places in Greece! Because of the Panagia Evangelistria church, and its reputedly miraculous picture of the Virgin Mary, Tinos is an island most well known for the religious pilgrimage that takes place on the date of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary - August 15th or "Dekapentavgoustos" as it is called in Greek.

The annual pilgrimage that takes place here is perhaps the most famous in the eastern Mediterranean. It is here that many pilgrims make the 800m journey from the ferry pier to the church on their hands and knees as a sign of devotion. Apart from being a significant centre of Orthodox worship, Tinos is an important Catholic centre too. This unique mix of religious traditions bestows the island with quite a distinct character and aura.

Apart from its religious significance, Tinos rewards visitors with its unspoiled beauty. Scenic villages, Cycladic dovecotes, stone-made houses, little squares, and amazing beaches are only a few of the reasons to visit the island. The homeland of famous artists such as Gyzis, Lytras, and Chalepas, Tinos is also renowned for its marble-carving tradition which is manifested in various crafts, chapels, fountains, and arches across the island. According to legend, it was Fidias, the renowned ancient Greek sculptor who taught the secrets of marble sculpture to the locals.
